An excellent article on Muslim women's headscarf by Johana Bhuiyan

Muslim women often are threatened for wearing their hijab in non-Muslim societies. As the recent lawsuit against the retailer Abercrombie & Fitch has underscored, they face serious discrimination in matters of job hiring. That is why many Muslim women in the western world  are afraid to keep hijab. I know of many Muslim men who also don't keep beard fearing job discrimination.

Here is an excellent piece on Hijab from Johana Bhuiyan, daughter of a friend of mine. She writes of her experience wearing the Muslim headscarf for women. She lives in NYC.

Before reading her article I was unaware of the many difficulties faced by Muslim women owing to their hijab. She mentions that the retailer Abercrombie & Fitch argued in front of the Supreme Court last week is not the only guilty party in such discriminatory practices when it refused to hire Samantha Elauf, a 17-year-old Muslim woman because her of hijab.

In Quebec last week, a judge told Rania El-Alloul that she would not hear her case unless she took off her hijab. “I will therefore not hear you if you are wearing a headscarf on your head just as I would not allow a person to appear before me wearing a hat or sunglasses on his or her head…” the judge told El-Alloul.

Just imagine where the western judicial system is heading! No wonder bearded Muslim men and hijab clad Muslim women are penalized more severely for small offenses while hardcore criminals with rich lawyers go scotch free. I seriously doubt if the same judge would force a Jewish orthodox man to remove his skullcap, if he had shown up in his court. As I am told by many observers all such practices are reserved for practicing Muslims only. The Canadian judge is a disgrace to justice. Shame on him!
